Take the mask off and LIVE!!

And observe how even when you control them you depend on them and are enslaved by them. People have become so much a part of your being that you cannot even imagine living a life that is unaffected or uncontrolled by them."

Politics part 2..
So here I am, sitting in a chair at The Summit Church watching a picture tribute of Stan Lowery, listening to his daughter sing a song dedicated to her dad, watching a video of the girls softball team at the summit thank their coach for all his efforts and hard work as their coach. Listening to a story from one of Stan’s best friends who met him one Sunday morning when Stan greeted him as he came in. Just listening to story after story of people’s lives that were changed, and not just changed inside the walls of a church building, but most importantly outside the church because of his Love for them and his Love for God. The reason that all of this is going on, is because Stan died of lung cancer just two days ago at the age of 57.
As I left Stan’s memorial service that evening I couldn’t help but think of the words of Donald Miller when he said “We get one story, you and I, and one story alone. God has established the elements, the settings and the climax and the resolution”. I begin to think about how that when I die that I want to have the same impact on so many people’s lives and that I would without a doubt want the same type of memorial as Stan, but in order for that to happen I would have to venture out on a life that puts others first, but most of all God first.
I also became overwhelmed with the thought that me, Stephen Bethea am to passionate about meaningless and pointless things. Not that I should not care about the things I was thinking about, but that I should just become less passionate about those things and more passionate about the things that matter most.
I started thinking how at Stan’s memorial they never once mentioned his passion for the way church is done, never once his passion for sports, and never once his passion for POLITICS. All that was mentioned was his passion and love for people and for God and what he actually did to show that passion and love. It was very humbling thoughts I had that night as I thought about the walls that even I build up because of meaningless things.
I also had the privilege of talking to one of my bestest friends in the world that same night that I had not talked to in months! This is a girl that was about to watch the VP presidential debate that cares an awful lot about politics, but all though she cares an awful lot, it is not one of her passions in life. It can’t be, because if it was she would not be the person she is today. This is a girl that is so busy getting out in to this world, and not just here, all over the world and she is changing this world one person at a time with and through her genuine and authentic love that she has for everyone she comes in contact with. That’s her passion, that was and still is Jesus’ passion, and after that night, I want that to be my passion.
Again, we know without a doubt that we people have the power to change things, but if we think change is having either John McCain or Barack Obama as president, then we need to examine ourselves. Because if we were really passionate about the God we say we serve, then we would not have time to be passionate about politics, we probably wouldn’t even have time to type a note/blog just as I am doing right now.
I think in so many ways this election has turned out to be yet another test from God, a test to see that whether or not we’re republican, or whether or not we’re democrat, that we would all still practice the greatest commandment from Jesus, and that’s not to call out the republicans, or call out the democrats, or say that you’re a “Christian” if you vote for this party, and your going to hell if you vote for that party!! No, that’s not it, in fact such statements make the Creator of us and even politicians, (shock shock) sick!! Because such statements build up the same walls that God paid an awful lot to tear down.
Jesus changed this world by being the greatest example of Love we have ever seen. The only people he opposed and was intolerant to and took a “stand” against were the “church people” that were always pointing their finger, or turning this person away, or condemning this person, or trying to stone someone that had committed a great sin in their eyes.
Any ways we just need to at least consider the life of Jesus every once in a while when we’re making such strong statements and judgments about people we really don’t even know, (who are just simply “voting” for someone that we disagree with) and we have to consider this, “Would Jesus stand with me as I’m making these judgments towards these other people, or would he handle me like he handled the religious leaders and pharisees of His day?” I think when we really think about it or actually try and see what the bible says about it, we will all know the answer.
Should you vote? Of course you should, but let’s not fall into the trap that some many people fall into, including me, and allow who we’re voting for to build walls between us and others. That is not what the Father of Love would want.
So to Stan Lowery, thank you for being an example of Love that we can all follow and for being so passionate about the things that matter most. To one of my bestest friends in the world, thank you for caring about politics, but for not being passionate about it to the point of letting it disable who you are and what you are to this world. And last but for sure not least, thank you Jesus for accepting me with open arms whether I be a duke fan, or the hardcore UNC fan that I am, whether I vote for a republican or a democrat, whether I go to this church or that church, and whether or not I commit this sin or that sin, thank you for still loving me the way you love me and for never playing favorites with the people inside or outside the church, no matter who they are or what they’ve done.
Thanks for reading, and again this is not a note/blog to put down any one guy running for office this year, this is just a note/blog to simply call out the problem in why this great country is so divided in so many ways in such times like the times we’re in. I don’t have it all figured out, and I struggle with the very things that I’ve talked about in this note/blog, but I also can recognize the problem within me and try my best to make the appropriate changes in my own journey to fix a problem that so many of us have.

Politics!!
Listen, this is not a note/blog to support or bash any one candidate running for office this year. This is a note/blog to say please by all means educate yourself on both candidates and who YOU personally think is the best candidate for the job and support them.
However, don't send me or anyone else that may oppose who you think is the man for the job your one sided emails or video's trying to change my or someone else's mind!! Hopefully most of the people supporting one or the other candidate this year has fully educated themselves on the man their supporting instead of just listening to the media or reading emails or watching video's. That being said I would hope that everyone is making that educated decision on the one they are supporting and so if you see someone that doesn't agree with your educated decision then that's okay. Leave it alone and stop trying to force your ideas down their throat. If you have something to say about one or the other candidate then say it on here, write a blog about it, post something on your blogsite or myspace or facebook for people that actually want to see it. Don't send it out to someone else in hopes of changing there mind or proving them wrong!!
It's going to be an interesting election to say the least, it already is. But instead of trying to paint the picture that one or the other candidate is an ignorant uneducated idiot by sending emails and video's to everyone that opposes your opinion, save yourself the embarrassment of looking like the idiot yourself for being so passionate about politics.
Side note.... Jesus was passionate about people, lets stop being so passionate and spending so much time and energy on someone that may or may not change the world, and lets be passionate and spend our time and energy on the world around us and what we can do to change it. We people with out a doubt have the power to change things, we cannot be so sure about politicians.

Boycott?!
I usually don't waste my time with insignificant things that just keep us from fulfilling what God has called us to do, but I just had to with this one!!
It's time for us Christians to understand that LOVE changes lives!! Christ was the perfect example of taking light in to dark places and the ones He was intolerant to and made a "stand" against were not the people in office or government or people that were screwed up in their beliefs and ways of life, but the church people / pharisees that thought they had it all figured out. (MARK 7:1-23)
Ronald Reagan once said that "The solution to the problem is not the government. The government is the problem". I'm not saying that the government is all the problem, but if we as Christians would stop putting so much trust and giving so much energy to the guys that are in office or want to be in office and come to an understanding that this is God's story and it's all in His hands and what He has ask us to do is simply Love and be Holy as He is Holy, I wonder how different things may be?!?!
George Bush, Barack Obama, or John McCain is not the solution to the problem. Jesus is the solution to the problem and Jesus is Love. Showing love to the enemy and the ones that hate us is the solution to the problem, not boycotting everything and everyone that may not hold the same beliefs as us, and for some reason it has become just that. (LUKE 6:27-36)
When it's all said and done we are not going to be measured by how much standing up we did, or how many emails we sent to congress, wal-mart, cnn, cbs, abc, nbc or anyone or anything else. I know my life will certainly not be measured for this blog / message I'm typing right now or any other blog / message I may type in the future. We will all be measured by the amount of Love we show to everyone we come in contact with, including homosexuals, abortion doctors or people that may have had an abortion, and shock shock, the democrats. I with out a doubt disagree and don't stand for a lot of the things that a lot of these men and women in congress (on both sides) stand for or don't stand for, but what we must understand is that we are not any better or any different from them in God's eyes, and that is where we have gone wrong in refusing by our actions to live out what Christ has called us as Christians to do a long time ago. (1 Corinthians 13)
All I'm saying is if we would spend less time whining about how bad everything is and stop talking about how we need to boycott this and boycott that and spend more time getting out in to this "big bad world" of darkness and allow Christ to shine His light in and through us in to the hearts and lives of all these "bad unlovable people with no morals", just think how many things and how many people could and would be changed as a result of what Christ does in and through us, not as a result of what we may say or do on our own!!
Jesus is the solution to all our problems. Love is the solution, and that is what we as Christians need to understand and act on so that we can start making a positive difference on this world with Christ in us, not Christ and us!! (COLOSSIANS 1:24-29)

Better Days.
So I was just sitting here thinking (I know that's scary but hang on) about the song I just got done listening to, "Better Days" by the Goo Goo Dolls. I was thinking about when John Rzeznik (lead singer) is ask the question in the song as to what he wants this year and how his response to that was that we would have the chance to find "Better Days". He says that "he does not need boxes wrapped in strings or designer love and empty things, just the chance that maybe we'll find Better Days". He goes on to say that he wishes that "everyone was loved tonight and some how stop this endless fight for just the chance that maybe we'll find "Better Days". He continues to challenge his listeners to take these words and sing out loud cause everyone is forgiving now." And that in a nut shell is his idea of "Better Days".
So the more and more I listen to this song and think about what he is saying, I start buying in to it. I mean is the world ever going to be a completely peaceful place? I don't really think so, but should that stop us from going out of our way to forgive quickly and always give love a fighting chance? No, it should not stop us.
There is so much hate going on in the world today it's sickening. Whatever the case may be there is no excuse. I think about what Gandhi once said. "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind." There is a huge lack of love and a lot of hate in everything that exists today and it is starting to make the whole world blind and if it continues the way it is now things are just going to get worse and worse until the world is blind.
I know some of you reading this blog may not believe in what I'm about to talk about and that's okay, because I'm sure you have good reason with how the representatives of what I'm about to talk about have dropped the ball and dropped it bad. It's going to be a little bit of a bunny trail but I think it's needed to make the point.
You may have been hurt by these people (representatives) just as I have, and as hard as it is for me to move past the confusion and lies and lack of love, we must not turn away from the One that created love and then set the ultimate example of what it looks like to forgive quickly and to give love a fighting chance. This Man came on to this earth and was determined to change the world around Him one person at a time and the rest is history. He had made this world and everything in it and set the whole story up and all its elements and what happened? The people turned it into this fancy religion with all these rules on how to be a good God follower and totally lost sight of the Love. They turned it into a system with all their little formulas and rules and God allowed this to go on for some time. Then after He had had enough He decided to come on the scene and turn the whole thing upside down and throw away all the rules and formulas and all the hate He saw going on in the world that He had made, and became a personal Love offering and the greatest example of Love mankind has ever seen.
So here we are thousands of years later and guess what? As you already know, we have done it again. I know you might be thinking, "What in the heck does that have to do with all this "Better Days" and "Love" talk?! Well I believe it has everything to do with it. I believe that the Life of Jesus was and is the ultimate example of what Love and forgiveness looks like, and if we don't have a belief in Him and the love life he lived and still lives, then maybe it will keep us from really being able to forgive quickly and love unconditionally and have the chance for "Better Days".
I believe that God is the creator of everything, including Love and the ability to forgive. The hard thing is that why would we want to believe and have a relationship with God when it appears that His followers are some of the most judgmental unloving people on the planet? Why would we want to risk becoming "one of them"?
Well the good news is that we don't have to become "one of them". We don't have to start following a set of rules and start living out these pointless formulas that do nothing except give us a reason to be proud of ourselves and to look good in the sight of our fellow "Christians" or our pastor. What we do have to do is understand and believe that God is the author and creator of love and that His hearts desire is to have a love relationship with us, and the way that happens is for us to love every single person we come in contact with no matter who they are or what they've done, and by doing that and believing in God we are at that point in a love relationship with Him.
The reason I throw the "God card" on the table, and the reason I talk about all this is because without God, and without the life of Jesus, love and the ability to forgive would not exist. You may have some friends just as I do that don't even believe in God that are some of the most loving people you know. When you see that you may think that it would be pointless to have a relationship with God when you see and understand that you don't have to have a relationship with Him to show that love. If you think that, then you're right. You don't have to have a relationship with Him to forgive quickly and love unconditionally, but what you also have to understand is that God is still the one behind that love you may see in people that don't care about Him. And so it certainly does not mean we should not want a relationship with Him. It just means that we should want even more to have a relationship with Him. I mean just think that if we had that relationship with Him just how much more we could show that love and how much more it would shine out.
Well this is a very long blog and I could go on and on but I may lose you if I haven't already. It has just taken me a long time to understand that we can all have a relationship with God without all the religious bs, and I just wanted to share this with anyone that wants to read it. Just know this. Religion is a performance. It's all about saying "look at me, look at what I've done!!" It is not about what we do, it's not about what we write. I mean I could write a million blogs a year and they may even be true, but if I never get out in to this world and show unconditional love to everyone I come in contact with, then my life has amounted to nothing, nothing but a performance. A true authentic relationship with God is all about believing and having faith that God is who He says He is. When we can do that, and when we can start showing this unconditional love, when we can start practicing the words of MLK JR. when he says, "Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend". When we can do all that, then at that point I believe with all my heart that we will all start having and seeing "Better Days".

I mean I could write a million blogs a year and they may even be true, but if I never get out in to this world and show unconditional love to everyone I come in contact with, then my life has amounted to nothing, nothing but a performance. A true authentic relationship with God is all about believing and having faith that God is who He says He is. When we can do that, and when we can start showing this unconditional love, when we can start practicing the words of MLK JR. when he says, "Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend". When we can do all that, then at that point I believe with all my heart that we will all start having and seeing "Better Days".
